New Native American Statue is Unveiled in Capitol Park

Here are some images from the new Native American Statue is Unveiled in Capitol Park. It was the dedication of the beautiful bronze William J. Franklin Sr. statue in downtown Sacramento’s park. It takes the place of the Junipero Serra monument, which was toppled in 2020 during the Black Lives Matter riots. Serra was associated with the gross mistreatment of Native Americans during the Spanish colonization period. Sacramento was also built on unceeded indigenous lands, therefore Assemblyman James Ramos (the […]

Roseville Joint Union High School District Board Meeting: Echoes of the Past

Last week I attended the Roseville Joint Union High School District Board Meeting. Pictured here are Board members Heidi Hall (Clerk), Pete Constant (President), Julie Hirota (VP), Superintendent John Becker, and speakers Natalie Robbins (President of the Roseville Secondary Education Association), and Barb Brass of PFLAG. Purpose The meeting was almost entirely dedicated to the nearly two hours of public discussion around a proposed parental notification policy. Like other policies that have recently passed in the State, including nearby Rocklin […]

Holy Cosplay, Batman! CrockerCon was a big blast!

We are long-term members of the Crocker Art Museum, but have never managed to make CrockerCon. This year was different, and with minor modifications, here is the brief blurb I wrote with photos that appeared in Outword Magazine in September 2023. * * * The ninth edition of CrockerCon was a lighthearted evening to schmooze with Stormtroopers and congregate with caped cuties. Held each September at Sacramento’s Crocker Museum, the event explores the influences that comics and cartooning have on […]

Nevada County Goes All Out in its Inaugural Pride Festival

After a busy calendar of events this past June, Nevada County wrapped up their Pride celebration with their first ever festival on Sunday, August 6. Held in downtown Nevada City’s Miners Foundry Cultural Center, the event had attracted over 300 people by late afternoon. “Nevada County Pride has been around for about 40 years. Originally, it was potlucks at private member’s homes, mostly gay men,” commented Nevada Pride chairperson Rick Partridge, “And the communication back then was done by postcard! […]

Auburn’s Colorful Festival of Lights

AUBURN, CA – DEC. 4, 2021 – FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE It turns out I just can’t get enough of these holiday events! Last night’s Festival of Lights event in Auburn was amazing! For such a small town, this was a super well-done event, with nearly 100 entries. Here was some of the information the Auburn Journal (Gold Country Media) shared about the event, that I’ve modified for today: Auburn’s Festival of Lights Parade always featuresa number of unique and […]

The People’s Tree Comes to Sac!

SACRAMENTO, CA – NOV. 3, 2021 Last week, the 84-foot white fir nicknamed “Sugar Bear” made a stop downtown on its cross-country trip to the nation’s capital.  This was only the fifth time since the tradition began in 1954 that the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree has come from a California forest, in this case Six Rivers. The tree was harvested from the Mad River Ranger District in Trinity County. Just last year, a little over 50 percent of the total district […]

Big Time Pow Wow

AUBURN, CA, U.S.A. – OCTOBER 17, 2021 What a treat! A fundraiser for the Sierra Native Alliance, today’s Big Time Pow Wow was a special experience. I was only able to stay for a few hours, but what a rich cultural experience it was. Razzle Dazzle The event began around 10am, with California Native Dancing and M.C. Razzle Dazzle. “A ho!” he told the crowd, is the only way to show appreciation for California Indians – no clapping allowed! In […]

National Trans Visibility Day

SACRAMENTO, CA, U.S.A. – OCTOBER 9, 2021 On Saturday, October 9, 2021 Sacramento celebrated National Trans Visibility Day at Crocker Park. The first-ever event included a march around the park and a program with a variety of community leaders, activists and organizers. Why Sacramento? For the first time since the March started in 2019, the event was held outside of Washington D.C.  The organization chose Orlando as the primary host city this year, but also added several satellite cities. Those […]

Happy 4th!

Here are some images from this year\’s 4th of July Parade and then one extra composite fireworks image.  I started up at the beginning of the event near Cherry Street, finding a little pocket of shade near some Auburn police volunteers.  The Auburn police honor guard, in full black wool uniforms (!) also came to share the shade, along with a few bystanders. Nearby, Good Day Sacramento interviewed Chamber of Commerce President Nalesh Chandra as part of their progressive live […]

COVID transition time for Reno

“COVID Transition Time for Reno”: We decided to take our new, used (1999) convertible MB 230SLK out for a quick roadtrip to Reno. The weather alternated between sunshine, overcast clouds, and even some rain. It felt symbolic to me of the somewhat weird transition place we are in the pandemic right now. Even though tier levels still change on a weekly basis, California is supposed to be open with no restrictions on June 15. Nevada moves ahead However, Nevada has […]
