"Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide."
- Kermit the Frog, "The Muppet Movie"
For many people, rainbows are joy-filled symbols. Their juxtaposition of bright colors suggest a spectrum of color and creativity. The ancient Bible story explains them as a promise from God, political organizations have used them to represent a diversity of people working together to improve American society, and the LGBTIQ community began embracing the rainbow flag in 1978 as a symbol of diversity and inclusiveness.
As a photographer, I love the way the spectrum of colors co-exist, and I look for rainbows in both nature and society. Here are a few of my favorite images, with genres from urban landscape to documentary. Enjoy!
