I was fortunate to be able to spend part of my winter break at the San Damiano Retreat Center, located in Danville, California.  The peaceful, welcoming center has been around since 1961, and the facility sits high in the hills, with a stunning view of Mount Diablo to the east.  While I am not a Catholic, I love to go there for private retreats and contemplation.  The Center is run by the Franciscan Friars, of the Province of St. Barbara, and they note that they "are a sanctuary of transformation for people of different faiths and backgrounds."  Besides walking the labyrinth, hiking in the hills, and enjoying the gardens, it's also a lovely place to take photos.
