Big Island

The Unexpected In May of 2019, De and I visited the Big Island, Hawaii. Neither of us had ever been. The “Big Island” has large amounts of lava, an active volcano and many fewer snorkeling and swimming beaches than the other islands. For that reason, it had been lower on our priority list for the islands. However, we found this island to be incredibly dramatic. Driving to Hilo from Kona on our first night, we encountered torrential rain and then […]

De’s Room

“De’s Room” is a created still life portrait of my wife in absentia. Her sacred sewing room includes her dress form and hat, which suggests her physical presence. Other artifacts represent and “reflect” three other generations, which says as much about De as her passion for color and textile. The image was created by taking multiple images in De’s room with different focus points. The original settings were ISO500, 32mm, f/8, and various shutter speeds. I then stacked the images […]

Hall of Fame Inductees

Celeb City! Last night, I was able to attend the red carpet part of the annual California Hall of Fame Inductees event at the California Museum. It was a little chaotic (especially with a bleeding finger and no bandaids or duct tape to be found), but lots of fun. I was very impressed by how the celebrities really took their time to interact with the crowd. Skateboard legend Tony Hawk signed skateboards and even did a little skateboarding on the […]

Best Little Cowboy

Growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, it’s not surprising that the summer camp I attended had a definite Western flavor to it.  We rode horses, shot arrows, paddled canoes. I loved it, and wore my straw cowboy hat everywhere. With my short hair and athletic, flat-chested little body, I was often taken for a boy, and I never minded.  After all, it seemed to me that boys had more fun! When the end of camp arrived one year, I was delighted […]

The US Show: Art from Immigrants

I am delighted to have two pieces, “Dual Citizen” and “Tenderly” for sale in Blueline Gallery’s upcoming The US Show. I shot both images in Stanley Park, British Columbia, last April. The show features art from immigrants to the U.S. If you’ve never been to this gallery, it’s worth the drive to old Roseville! Artist Statement Here is the artist statement that I created to accompany my two images to emphasize the show’s theme around art from immigrants: My immediate […]

Wakamatsu Fest150

I had the pleasure of attending the 150th anniversary celebration of Japanese immigration to the U.S. at the Wakamatsu Fest150, held in Placerville June 6-9, 2019. All images were taken with my Nikon D750 camera and Nikon Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6g lens. The event celebrates the 1869 arrival of a group of Japanese colonists from Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan in Gold Hill, California to start a tea and silk farm. The site is now a registered historic landmark, and is also the birthplace […]

Sam Smith Concert

I had a great time shooting the Sam Smith concert at the Golden 1 arena here in Sacramento last Friday.  The opening act was Beth Ditto, so a proud, openly gay man was paired with a proud, open lesbian for an amazing double bill.  Ditto did a great tribute to Aretha Franklin and despite a wig malfunction, put on a fabulous, energetic set.  Smith rocked it with his beautiful high tenor singing a ton of his well-known songs, with dramatic […]

River Cats Equality Night

I had a great time on Friday, June 29, 2018 at the Sacramento River Cats Equality Night.  From the complimentary rainbow hand towels. to the carrying of the Pride/rainbow flag, to the Sacramento Gay Mens Chorus singing the National Anthem, it was a fun evening.  Not to mention the fact that San Francisco Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto pitched the first several innings as part of his rehab process, and helped the Cats shut out the Fresno Grizzlies 4-0.  Below is my […]
