Uplifting Auburn event honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy

Here are some images from Auburn’s 40th celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. The General Gomez Arts & Event Center organized the march and program in downtown Auburn at their arts center. The theme for the event was “Strategizing for Change.” It was a well-attended, uplifting event with over 100 people that began with rapper Unity Lewis leading a downtown march. It was then followed by an event at the center that included Native American music by Mignon […]

Holy Cosplay, Batman! CrockerCon was a big blast!

We are long-term members of the Crocker Art Museum, but have never managed to make CrockerCon. This year was different, and with minor modifications, here is the brief blurb I wrote with photos that appeared in Outword Magazine in September 2023. * * * The ninth edition of CrockerCon was a lighthearted evening to schmooze with Stormtroopers and congregate with caped cuties. Held each September at Sacramento’s Crocker Museum, the event explores the influences that comics and cartooning have on […]

From Preview Plates to Gourmet Dinner on the Bridge

Three articles celebrating Sacramento’s Farm-to-Fork Festival This year I wrote three articles. inconjunction with Sacramento’s Farm-to-Fork festival. With minor modifications, they are here in their entirety and first appeared in Outword Magazine in August and September 2023. Below them I include the photographic equipment I used for each shoot. Farm-to-Fork Festival ready to celebrate its tenth anniversary The most high-profile culinary experience in Sacramento turns ten next month. The inaugural Farm-to-Fork Festival in 2013 was a one-day event that included […]

Nevada County Goes All Out in its Inaugural Pride Festival

After a busy calendar of events this past June, Nevada County wrapped up their Pride celebration with their first ever festival on Sunday, August 6. Held in downtown Nevada City’s Miners Foundry Cultural Center, the event had attracted over 300 people by late afternoon. “Nevada County Pride has been around for about 40 years. Originally, it was potlucks at private member’s homes, mostly gay men,” commented Nevada Pride chairperson Rick Partridge, “And the communication back then was done by postcard! […]

Muy rico! The Floricanto Family Festival celebrates Latin culture and rhythms in Sacramento

These images were taken at the Floricanto Family Festival in Sacramento, California on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The event was organized by Casa de Español. I was volunteering with Casa de Español at the Mexican Cultural Center of Northern California. Biggest photo challenge of the day was trying not to abandon the booth all day to catch some of the amazing dancers! The event took place in the heart of the city on R Street, right next to Casa. I […]

Dia de los Muertos

SACRAMENTO, CA – OCT. 29, 2022 – DIA DE LOS MUERTOS Que bueno! Me encanta el evento se llama Dia de los Muertos. Es un tiempo muy especial para recuedar las personas amadas y para la communidad Latino para crear los altares con offrendas muy spectacularas. Yup, I’m still working on my Spanish, thanks to local Spanish school Casa de Español. Last weekend we headed down to the Latino Center for Arts and Culture’s annual Day of the Dead event. […]

Pride in Peru

LIMA, PERÚ – June 25, 2022 – MARCHA DEL ORGULLO Pride in Perú: Marcha del Orgullo celebrates 20 years Aside from one colorful clothing ad and the outside of a popular gay club, I had not seen any signs of Pride in Peru during my stay in Lima.  Por supuesto, I knew that queer culture existed in this massive South American capital city of over 13 million.  I’d read that even though the country had yet to legalize same-sex unions […]

Sonoma County Pride

SANTA ROSA, CA – JUNE 4, 2022 – SONOMA COUNTY PRIDE The older I get, the more I enjoy smaller. Prides. They seem to be one of the big trends right now too – beyond the big cities, we are gradually seeing many smaller communities hosting their own home-grown Pride events.  Sonoma County Pride was like a cross between a small-town July 4th parade and a mini-Mardi Gras.   De and I headed out early for the two-and-a-half hour drive from […]

Bans off our Bodies March

SACRAMENTO, CA – MAY. 14, 2022 – BANS OFF OUR BODIES MARCH On Saturday, I headed down to shoot the Bans off our Bodies March & Rally. It was organized by Planned Parenthood in response to the release of the U.S. Supreme Court draft. If the decision is finalized, it will overturn Roe v. Wade, the historic 1973 case legalizing abortion across the U.S. Because I had another event later in the day, I could only witness the first part […]

Merry Everything!

SACRAMENTO, CA – DECEMBER 2, 2021 – CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING After a year’s hiatus, Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom hosted the 90th Annual California State Capitol Tree Lighting Ceremony last week.  This year’s 65’ white fir is decorated with approximately 500 hand-crafted ornaments made by children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The event came just one day after Newsom’s announcement that the state had detected the country’s first omicron case.  The celebration’s emphasis on […]
