Muy rico! The Floricanto Family Festival celebrates Latin culture and rhythms in Sacramento

These images were taken at the Floricanto Family Festival in Sacramento, California on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The event was organized by Casa de Español. I was volunteering with Casa de Español at the Mexican Cultural Center of Northern California. Biggest photo challenge of the day was trying not to abandon the booth all day to catch some of the amazing dancers! The event took place in the heart of the city on R Street, right next to Casa. I […]

One Day, Two Shows – Exploring new exhibits at the de Young and Legion of Honor Museums in San Francisco

Last week I had a “museum day” in the City. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are comprised of the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor. They are true cultural landmarks in the city. I’ve been going to both on an off since I was a student at Cal. It seems like the de Young was not renovated that long ago, but turns out that it was actually completed in 2005! Located in Golden Gate Park, the […]

Shooting Day #1 at The Homeless World Cup

This past Saturday, the Homeless World Cup arrived in Sacramento. For the first time in the organization’s 20-year existence, a U.S. city was chosen to host the weeklong event. This year’s upbeat, exciting competition gathered 40 teams from around the world in a powerful display of skill and resilience. Participants in the Cup must be at least 16 years old, have not taken part in a previous Cup, and have been homeless at some point in the past year. There […]

Pre-Pride in the Castro District

We were not able to get to San Francisco Pride this year, but we did do a fun, self-guided walking tour of the Castro District, the city’s historic gayborhood. That is, once we found parking! The lot by the Castro Theatre was closed for the annual Frameline Festival, but two-hour street parking is available around the area. The Tour There are of course a lot of options these days for self-guided tours and apps. One of the newest players we’ve […]

Woodland Pride Arrives on Main Street

Woodland Pride Arrives on Main Street Yolo County’s capital recovers from ugly 2022 incident as the community works together to increase visibility and understanding For the first time in the three years it has held the event,  Woodland celebrated Pride month with a festive parade in the heart of its downtown. Over a hundred participants gathered at Main and Walnut Street before stepping off as the town clock chimed ten. The group grew in size as other Yolo County locals joined them for the […]

Pride in Peru

LIMA, PERÚ – June 25, 2022 – MARCHA DEL ORGULLO Pride in Perú: Marcha del Orgullo celebrates 20 years Aside from one colorful clothing ad and the outside of a popular gay club, I had not seen any signs of Pride in Peru during my stay in Lima.  Por supuesto, I knew that queer culture existed in this massive South American capital city of over 13 million.  I’d read that even though the country had yet to legalize same-sex unions […]

Sonoma County Pride

SANTA ROSA, CA – JUNE 4, 2022 – SONOMA COUNTY PRIDE The older I get, the more I enjoy smaller. Prides. They seem to be one of the big trends right now too – beyond the big cities, we are gradually seeing many smaller communities hosting their own home-grown Pride events.  Sonoma County Pride was like a cross between a small-town July 4th parade and a mini-Mardi Gras.   De and I headed out early for the two-and-a-half hour drive from […]

National Trans Visibility Day

SACRAMENTO, CA, U.S.A. – OCTOBER 9, 2021 On Saturday, October 9, 2021 Sacramento celebrated National Trans Visibility Day at Crocker Park. The first-ever event included a march around the park and a program with a variety of community leaders, activists and organizers. Why Sacramento? For the first time since the March started in 2019, the event was held outside of Washington D.C.  The organization chose Orlando as the primary host city this year, but also added several satellite cities. Those […]
