The People’s Tree Comes to Sac!

SACRAMENTO, CA – NOV. 3, 2021 Last week, the 84-foot white fir nicknamed “Sugar Bear” made a stop downtown on its cross-country trip to the nation’s capital.  This was only the fifth time since the tradition began in 1954 that the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree has come from a California forest, in this case Six Rivers. The tree was harvested from the Mad River Ranger District in Trinity County. Just last year, a little over 50 percent of the total district […]

A Tragedy Unfolds: Kamloops Indian Residential School

KAMLOOPS INDIAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL, B.C., CANADA – OCT. 30, 2021 I could not visit the North Shuswap area in British Columbia without seeing the Kamloops Indian Residential School (KIRS). Last summer, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (the Salish Indian band) announced that ground-penetrating-radar was used to locate the human remains of over 200 children. The remains were detected in the orchard area of the campus, south of the main buildings. The revelation rocked the country, and shook many out of their apathy […]

Next up was Oakland Pride, BUT it got cancelled because of COVID. Then I drove down to Merced on Saturday, September 18 to see their second annual Pride.  It had been cancelled too, but I did get to see the nascent […]

They also closed the the Foresthill Bridge road.. Lake Clementine was evacuated and numerous local residents watched near Lincoln Highway and Bowman Road, as Cal Fire planes drop bright red fire retardant on the fire. Dark clouds of smoke indicated structures across from the canyon were likely burning. Living in […]

Wakamatsu Fest150

I had the pleasure of attending the 150th anniversary celebration of Japanese immigration to the U.S. at the Wakamatsu Fest150, held in Placerville June 6-9, 2019. All images were taken with my Nikon D750 camera and Nikon Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6g lens. The event celebrates the 1869 arrival of a group of Japanese colonists from Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan in Gold Hill, California to start a tea and silk farm. The site is now a registered historic landmark, and is also the birthplace […]
