About me

Chris

Freelance photojournalist & image maker

Warm Greetings!

Hello, and welcome to my website! I’m Chris Allan (she/her/hers), and I’m a photojournalist, stock, and fine art photographer who lives in Auburn, California.

My vision is threefold: to show viewers images that new and meaningful, to push myself to find different ways of seeing,  and to help others realize bring their images into the world.

There's I love nothing better than getting out into Auburn and the area to see what's happening!  I'm a contributor to the local paper, and use some of my images for editorial and stock photography for the three agencies (Shutterstock, Adobe and Alamy). My homepage currently features mages from the 4th of July parade and the recent Foresthill Fire, some of which were picked up by the Auburn Journal.

Over the years, I’ve also been fortunate to travel all over the world.  Those images area also in my stock portfolios, and some of them have also appeared in numerous publications, from The Sun Magazine, to the Humane Society, to Rotarian Magazine.

I'm also a proud member of the LGBTIQA+ community and I'm so excited that gay pride events have slowly started to resume.  I've written and photographed for Outword (our regional's queer paper) for many years, with highlights being my cover photo of Adam Rippon from the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships and coverage of Pete Buttigieg when he was on the campaign trail in Sacramento.

When I'm not out and about, I also create fine art images.  They are usually based on my local or wider travels.  Through them, I work to bring new perspectives to those images by emphasizing the use of macro and other abstraction, reflections, collages, interval image compilations, and in-camera multiple exposures.  I also think it is important to ponder difficult realities, such as the plights of animals in captivity, self-reveal the fluidities of gender, and speak my mind on politics.

Finally, as a service to the community, I do offer processing/printing, matting and framing services to the community as well as selling my own original fine art images.

Equipment-wise, these days I shoot Nikon D780 and D750 for their great portability and all-round performance.  My Tamron 2.8 24-70mm and Nikon 2.8 70 - 200mm are my go-to event lenses, while a series of primes (14/20/35/50/90 - macro) fill out my fine art lens stable.  I also love my handy little Canon GX1, which shoots in RAW and is perfect for spontaneous street and candid photography.

My fine art images have also appeared (and sold) in art galleries and centers across the state. I’ve received a number of awards, and I sell images privately and commercially. If you are interested in purchasing copies of any of the images you see on the site, please use the contact form.

You are welcome to access my stock images at Shutterstock and Alamy for licensed usage for commercial and editorial uses including websites, books, magazines, brochures and advertising.
