Chris
Photojournalist and travel photographer
Warm Greetings!
Hello, and welcome to my website! I’m Chris Allan (she/her), and I’m a Canadian-American reporter, photojournalist, and travel photographer.
My vision is to celebrate the color and diversity of this amazing world of ours and to push myself to find different ways of seeing.
I have more than 3,500 licensed images selling on Shutterstock, Adobe Stock and Alamy, and in the past my fine art images have appeared and won awards in regional and statewide group shows.
I am a long-standing contributor to Outword Magazine, the LGBTQ+ publication for the Sacramento and Central Valley (California) region. Besides our online presence, you can even still find us in print! I cover news, events and sports for Outword, and occasionally freelance for other publications.
Highlights from my queer career with Outword include covering: LGPA, Amgen pro-cycling, River Cats baseball, and two U.S. National Figure Skating Championships; red carpet and concert events with luminaries such as Sam Smith, RuPaul, and Megan Rapinoe; and political events featuring Pete Buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren and President Joe Biden.
My photojournalism is often based around celebrations and festivals, or political events and protests. I often focus on underrepresented populations, with many images from the LGBTQ+, Latinx, and Native American communities.
You'll find me traveling on the road three to four months of the year. I have been to 41 counties and two U.S. territories, and at one time spent two years living in Southern Africa. My travel photography zooms in on urban environments and I enjoy traveling regularly throughout the Western U.S. and Canada in my electric car. I shamelessly use my East Coast families every year as jumping-off points for other content creation opportunities. These days I am experimenting with a Lensbaby Composer Pro on one of my Nikons, while thoroughly delighting in a very dated digital Leica.
As my Spanish continues to improve, I have been expanding my work to Latin America, reporting on Lima's Marcha del Orgullo (Pride March), in 2022, and an un upcoming Gay-Games-related piece based on two recent trips to Jalisco state. I also explore classic European locations as time and budget allow.
I am based in Auburn, California in the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. In my free time I play loads of pickleball, word hard on a local food bank garden, love going to the movies with my wife, and follow the endless becomings of our two princess cats.
Thank you for stopping by, and please do feel free to be in contact with me. 🇺🇸 🏳️🌈 🇨🇦
