Hola Peru!

I was fortunate to be able to travel to Peru for two weeks in 2022. It was a wonderful adventure!  While there, I wrote several  blogs that you can find on my Instagram feed, as well as two articles in Outword after the trip covering the huge Pride celebration in Lima and a longer overview of the trip.  I am pasting those below with minor modifications. What an amazing country! Mucho gusto, Peru! Highlights from a two-week jaunt to South America […]

Finding the Fun: A Quick Visit to South Lake Tahoe and its Picturesque Lakeside

For De’s birthday this year, we opted for a quick visit to South Lake Tahoe. This amazing body of water straddles both California and Nevada and is only a two-hour drive from Auburn. We chose to do it as a circle, heading out on Highway 50 to catch the great summit view as you come into the basin. We returned via I-80, where you pass beautiful Emerald Bay. This really was just a whirlwind trip with only two nights on […]

The following article about the Los Cabos art scene appeared with minor modifications appeared in Outword Magazine on December 27, 2023. ¡Viva el Arte! : Los Cabos’ art scene is a stunner Photos and text by Chris Allan While most of us won’t turn down a relaxing day gazing out at emerald waves on the golden sands of a Baja beach, it turns out that’s not the only thing to do in Los Cabos. Yes, the southern tip of Baja California […]

Exploring More Vibrant Latino Culture: A Day in East L.A.

With minor modifications, here is the article on East Los Angeles that I wrote with photos that appeared in Outword Magazine in October 2023.  If you’re so over the usual Los Angeles tourist traps or you’ve found yourself with an extra day in the metropolis, why not grab the 101 and head out to Boyle Heights? It’s one of several communities in “East Los,” a vibrant, colorful area full of Chicano culture. This historic urban zone offers a non-glitzy, often gritty, but […]

Muy rico! The Floricanto Family Festival celebrates Latin culture and rhythms in Sacramento

These images were taken at the Floricanto Family Festival in Sacramento, California on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The event was organized by Casa de Español. I was volunteering with Casa de Español at the Mexican Cultural Center of Northern California. Biggest photo challenge of the day was trying not to abandon the booth all day to catch some of the amazing dancers! The event took place in the heart of the city on R Street, right next to Casa. I […]

One Day, Two Shows – Exploring new exhibits at the de Young and Legion of Honor Museums in San Francisco

Last week I had a “museum day” in the City. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are comprised of the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor. They are true cultural landmarks in the city. I’ve been going to both on an off since I was a student at Cal. It seems like the de Young was not renovated that long ago, but turns out that it was actually completed in 2005! Located in Golden Gate Park, the […]

Shooting Day #1 at The Homeless World Cup

This past Saturday, the Homeless World Cup arrived in Sacramento. For the first time in the organization’s 20-year existence, a U.S. city was chosen to host the weeklong event. This year’s upbeat, exciting competition gathered 40 teams from around the world in a powerful display of skill and resilience. Participants in the Cup must be at least 16 years old, have not taken part in a previous Cup, and have been homeless at some point in the past year. There […]

Pre-Pride in the Castro District

We were not able to get to San Francisco Pride this year, but we did do a fun, self-guided walking tour of the Castro District, the city’s historic gayborhood. That is, once we found parking! The lot by the Castro Theatre was closed for the annual Frameline Festival, but two-hour street parking is available around the area. The Tour There are of course a lot of options these days for self-guided tours and apps. One of the newest players we’ve […]

Making photos in Sacramento

These photographs were made over a lot of years in Sacramento, California, approximately 2011 to the present. Until 2014 I lived in the state’s capital and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I first started getting more serious about photography, I decided to focus on Sacramento’s major landmarks as I would within the genre of travel photography: the Capitol, Old Sacramento, and downtown. I had a cropped sensor Olympus camera. They I moved further out along the American River, focusing for a […]
