After a busy calendar of events this past June, Nevada County wrapped up their Pride celebration with their first ever festival on Sunday, August 6. Held in downtown Nevada City’s Miners Foundry Cultural Center, the event had attracted over 300 people by late afternoon. “Nevada County Pride has been around for about 40 years. Last week I had a “museum day” in the City. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are comprised of the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor. They are true cultural landmarks in the city. I’ve been going to both on an off since I was a student at Cal. It seems like the de Young was not renovated that long ago, but turns out that it was actually completed in 2005! This past Saturday, the Homeless World Cup arrived in Sacramento. For the first time in the organization’s 20-year existence, a U.S. city was chosen to host the weeklong event. This year’s upbeat, exciting competition gathered 40 teams from around the world in a powerful display of skill and resilience. Participants in the Cup must be at least 16 years old, have not taken part in a previous Cup, and have been homeless at some point in the past year. There […]
For De’s birthday this year, we opted for a quick visit to South Lake Tahoe. This amazing body of water straddles both California and Nevada and is only a two-hour drive from Auburn. We chose to do it as a circle, heading out on Highway 50 to catch the great summit view as you come into the basin. We returned via I-80, where you pass beautiful Emerald Bay. We were not able to get to San Francisco Pride this year, but we did do a fun, self-guided walking tour of the Castro District, the city’s historic gayborhood. That is, once we found parking! The lot by the Castro Theatre was closed for the annual Frameline Festival, but two-hour street parking is available around the area.
