Yup, I’m still working on my Spanish, thanks to local Spanish school Casa de Español.
Last weekend we headed down to the Latino Center for Arts and Culture’s annual Day of the Dead event. There was live music and dance, great food, wonderful handicrafts, a created graveyard, and lots of altars. The altars are typically decorated with bright orange marigolds, painted skulls, candles, photos and mementos related to the family members being remembered. It’s an upbeat day, like a cross between Halloween and the Christian celebrations of All Souls/Saint’s Days.
Above are a few photos from the event. I think my favorite was the “Danza de los Viejitos,” the dance of the old men. You can see one very lively, masked dancer in the air in the gallery.
